Quick Tips on Writing an Eulogy for a Father
Question: Who is the best person to write an eulogy for a father? The eldest child in the family? Perhaps. It is both an honor and a great responsibility to write an eulogy for a father. That is because the type of eulogy that a child writes for a father depicts the kind of relationship between father and child. And that is not exactly an easy thing to reveal, especially when delivered in front of an audience. Hence the conflict: to be brutally honest or to be shy.
Of course, ultimately, the choice of writing style will depend very much on the personality of the child. Some will prefer to be bold and upfront, while others will decide to be shy and subtle. Bear in mind that there is really no right or wrong here. But there is such a thing as what feels right, and what feels wrong. So being aware of how one feels about an eulogy is very important.
Imagine you are the one writing an eulogy for a father. How would you want to remember him? All great eulogies for fathers start by asking relevant questions. So ask yourself, how would you want to remember him, and more importantly, how you want others to remember him. After all, an eulogy is presented to an audience, and not solely for your alone. So you will have to fine a balance between what you are comfortable in delivering, and what you want others to hear. Often, this is harder than it sounds. Your mind may be telling you one thing, but your heart may be telling you to do a different thing. So what should you do?
When in doubt, always consult your feelings. Perhaps the best thing to do (or the wisest) is to be as earnest as you can when writing an eulogy about your father. It is not necessary to deliberately try to portray him in a positive light, neither is it necessary to down play his achievements. Just by saying what is, and leaving everything else to faith, the eulogy will have a better chance of turning out to be a great one.
Sometimes, people with perfectly written eulogies choose to not look at the words when it comes to delivering the speech. They do this just because at the very last moment, they felt uncomfortable with the written eulogy. Something just doesn't feel right. Perhaps it's too structured. Perhaps it's not really reflective of the life that a father has led. For whatever the reason, emotions have a funny way of taking over when the moment arrives.
To avoid such last minute uneasiness, which can lead to awkward situations, learn to trust your feelings and emotions when writing an eulogy about your father. If you are in need of ideas, download some sample eulogies for fathers to get you into the mood of writing. Let the ideas swim around in your head for some moments, and don't be in too much of a hurry to write anything. Soon, you will discover that you already know, from way inside, the right things to say.
