Explanation of the Seventh Stage

Base Seven is the way to assess the result on one's Citta due to following the Path (Magga). The Path is the actions which one performs; the result (Phala), is the reaping of the reward.
When the path destroys the defilements, overcoming them by "cutting-them-off" (Samuccheda), either partly or fully, according to the State-of-Perfection (Vasana-Parami) ; the Stream-Winner (Sotapanna) and the Once-Returner (Sakadagami) do not relapse from the practice of good-conduct (Vinaya).1 The Never-Returner (Anagami) does not relapse from the teachings (Sutta),1 which means that his next birth will be in the "Pure-Abode" Realm of Brahma Gods (Suddhavasa-Brahma). He will not again enter a womb, nor after death will he die any more. Therefore he is reckoned not to fall away from the practice of the teachings.
The Arahant does not relapse from the Ultimate State (Paramattha).1 This means that his Citta does not relapse from the Renunciation of both merit and demerit, for he has finished with both of them. He is one whose Citta does not expand; it does not disappear nor appear. As for the Descending (Cuti)-Citta, the Relinking-Citta (Patฺisandhi), birth and death, he never again grasps hold of any object.2 He only holds to non-self (Anatta) as the object. None of the realms of becoming can arise again for him, because he has abandoned, and attained detachment from, mind (Nama) and body (Rupa), the five-aggregates (Khandha), and the spheres-of-sensation (Ayatana) ; as though they are on fire. He does not grasp at them again, and only his spheres-of-sensation remain active, but it is as though they have beceme cool and always remain cool, at all times and in all places. As said by the Lord Buddha, "Atthi Bhikkhave Tadayatanam" ; "Verily Bhikkhus, all the spheres of sense remain, but there is no arising, no existing, no doing, no making of formations and no adding flavours".3
1. No arising, means that no more is there the arising of greed, hate, and delusion ; of merit and demerit, of love and bate.
2. No existing, means the non-existence of hereby or thereby, of they and us, of man or woman, of animal or human. The non-existence of a society or group, of Dharmayutta or Maha Nikaya;4 the non-existence of anything in this world or any other world.
3. No doing, means that there is no doing of merit or demerit, of good or evil; whatever is done is only inoperative (Kiriya)5 and is not kamma.
4. No making of compounded things and no adding flavours, means that he does not make compounded things in the past, present or future. His Citta is not disorderly; if he thinks, then his thoughts are inoperative. His Citta has overcome all the worldly-conditions (Lokadhamma), and he retains his Morality, Samadhi, and Wisdom without any need to keep a guard on them. This is so because both bad and good states of the Citta have ceased.
Which Defilements are partly overcome and which are completely overcome in each of the Ariyan Paths
The Noble Disciples (Ariya) of all classes are the ones who have attained Mahaggata-Sarana-Gamana-Magga-Sila,1 which means that they do not depart from the three refuges, nor from the moral precepts, because the defilements do not touch them.
