Barbero

When to let go?

A champion, cut down at the zenith of his career. A horse with more heart than mere mortal man could comprehend.

His time was cut short so quickly, a false start in the Belmont, re-gated… he could have then, been damaged. No one would know until later, when his hoof slid, his leg gave out… when he was done.

His strong jockey fought the internal fears as he was reining him in, what was wrong? His horse was damaged? What happened? Prado could feel the horse falling apart beneath him. Did he know the champion was forever changed, forever damaged, maybe done for all time? Not at that moment!

Edgar knew Barbero was hurt and it was his job to stop him!

What did Prado fear as he struggled to rein in his brilliant horse, the horse that would not quit! Stop now! Listen to me, forget the race I need you to listen to me! Time to go against your grain, your blood, your training, ignore the horses racing away, leaving you behind. I need you to stop…now! And stop him he did.

The replay of the breakdown was unbearable to see. They played it again and again… no more! I had to turn off the TV for the rest of that day.

The world of horse racing knew they had lost a special one, perhaps his genetics could be passed on, perhaps he could with great veterinary skill be put to stud.

His time was cut short so quickly, a false start in the Belmont, re-gated, at that time he could have been fatally damaged… no one would know until later…

later when his hoof slid, his leg gave out… and he was done.

But Barbero would not give up, he fought with all of his will to go on, that is the gift and the curse of the great Thoroughbreds.

Not only did he shatter his leg, he shattered his heart, as he would never have allowed all of those horses racing away, to leave him in the dust, no way, not him!

A racing legend yet unsung, he ended the Belmont Stakes in an ambulance- racing not for home, but for the best that modern veterinary medicine could provide.

Know that they did their best. The doctor's wanted him to survive, wanted him to live well, to give his legacy to the foals yet to be born, but alas…

All the Kings horses and all the Kings men could not put Barbero together again.

We rejoiced in his recovery and hoped for the best, and now we must let him go. No more surgeries no more restraints.

No more doing what you were not bred to do. You were bred to run, to win and to excel. That was your mission here.

We mourn the loss of the brilliance he was. We regret the legacy he could have left in his wake.

Sleep well dear one, you will not be forgotten.
