Fishing tackle has undergone major transformations since the dawn of fishing. In this article I will give you a brief overview of the advances in technology, from the days of the caveman right through until today.

Fishing dates back to at least the upper paleolithic period (around 40,000 years ago) where fishing took on a form different from todays methods. They used spears instead of lines and nets. These spears evolved barbs and resemble what we now use as harpoons.

The earliest signs of modern style of fishing pin points its emergence between 7500 and 3000 years ago in California, where fishing tackle with gorge hooks and lines has been discovered. Some native American tribes are also known to have polluted freshwater streams with toxins to enable the capture of fish.

There is a wine cup discovered in ancient Greek ruins depicting a boy on a rock holding a fishing rod. In the water below him is a fish trap or fishing cage used for keeping fish live.

Before the modern plastics and fibres that fishing line is made from these days was invented, fishing line was made from many other materials: rawhide, plant fibres, hemp stems, even coconut hair. Nets also benefitted from these materials.

Now we roughly know the origins of fishing tackle, let's take a look at modern advancements and technologies.

These days, fishing line benefits from advancements in technology and is made from almost exclusively artificial substances including Polyvinylidene Fluoride (Flurocarbon), Nylon, Polyethene, Dacron and Dyneema. These artificial substances have many advantages over their natural counterparts, being stronger, lighter and easier to camouflage so it is not noticed by the fish.

There are hundreds of different types of fishing hooks available these days made from different materials and in different shapes, all with a single goal in mind. Catching fish. There are way too many for me to go over here, however, they all share some similarities.

Reels have been invented and rods have also undergone major transformations, using space age technologies to get the most out of the fishing experience. Gone are the days of a stick with a line and a hook.

Other advancements have been made in the lures themselves, the recent addition of "swimbaits" gets this author particularly excited. When pulled through the water, swim baits mimic the actions of injured live fish.

Bait alarms are another modern advancement. Around for about 20 years now, bait alarms allow the fisherman to go about other activities or just sleep while his/her bait alarm keeps an eye on the bait and alerts the fisherman/woman if there is anything to note.
