If you need a head lice treatment, don't worry. Not to be concerned though, there are literally millions of people that are infected with these parasites every year and thankfully, we have ways to get rid of the bugs easily.

These insects are probably one of the safer parasites that can infest a person. Yes, they're a annoying pests that make your head itch and can irritate your scalp. That's about all the trouble they cause for us however. Unlike mosquitoes, they are not considered a health hazard. Of course, the ease with which they can be transferred from person to person is a problem.

At first look, the number of different treatment options may seem a bit intimidating. Fact is however that they all can be grouped together into one of four major categories. All treatment plans will fit into either an insecticide based program, an essential oil or natural solution, a mechanical solution or a home remedy / folk medicine solution

The vast majority of home remedy, do it yourself methods are designed with the idea of smothering the bugs and loosening the eggs from the hair follicle. If you choose one food product or another, the principle is still the same.

So here's a breakdown of the four basic types of Head Lice Treatment Options.

1. Bug poison or insecticide based shampoos. Whether you get them from the doctor, locally or from the Internet, they all kill using a poison. These products do a good job if you don't mind using poison on your kids hair. Don't forget all the scratching and itching has probably caused open sores on their heads which is a good way for the shampoo to get into their bodies.

2. All mechanical means to remove the parasites and eggs involve carefully combing from hair follicle to the tip of the hair. It's a big chore in someone with long hair. Still, it is an effective method of insect removal as long as you don't miss even a single nit.

3. Essential Oils. These products use a variety of essential oils to disinfect and kill off the insects. These work well and are much safer than insecticide based shampoos. The scratching and itching caused by the sores and insects are also treated providing a measure of relief to the person with the infection.

4. Use a home remedy option. These are the food product method of trying to deal with head pediculosis. Pediculosis is the dollar word for a louse infestation.

In any event, home remedies suggest putting mayonnaise, peanut butter, grease, etc. etc. on the infected head, leaving it on for 8-10 hours, then trying to clean off the mess only to repeat if necessary. Overall, even if they work they're usually so difficult to successfully use these home cures are at best, a poor head lice treatment strategy.

Deciding what head lice treatment option is best depends on your level of comfort with using insecticide based products. Consider that only one category of products, the essential oil products have the best opportunity to get rid of the problem without using poisons. Overall a good choice.
