Musical Tastes: The Real Power Of Love?

When I was fourteen I was your average teenager in the mid 80s: I loved bubble gum pop and my highest aspiration was to be exactly like Debbie Gibson. I danced to Rick Astley and thought that Bon Jovi was heavy metal. Then I developed my first real crush. I was in love and wanted to impress him in every way I could. So I paid close attention to his interests and made them mine. I started reading the same authors and listening to the same music.

Well, the guy turned out to be a big jerk but he introduced me to some great music and some of my favorite artists. I went from a hard core top 40 listener to discovering such great bands as INXS and U2. I also heard Bob Marley for the first time and was introduced to ska and The Dead Milkmen. For me, it was a musical revolution that continues stills. He helped me to branch out in my musical interests and to not be scared to listen to new things.

When we develop an interest in someone it only makes sense that we want to know and be a part of every aspect of their life, music included. This can be a great way to discover new artists and to bond with someone.
When I was getting to know my husband music was a big part of the process. Both huge music lovers it was important for us to share our favorites with each other. If not for him I would not be the huge fan of John Lennon that I am. And without me he never would have discovered how great Blue Rodeo is.

So while all crushes and love affairs don't always work out, we have to take from them whatever we can. And sometimes what we take is a favorite new artist.
