For years as a CEO of very successful online companies (while Google was in its humble beginnings) I had many SEO companies contact me to use their services. I never really understood what they meant by "optimize" my site and the quotes to do this were always between $10K - $20K (set up) and then a few thousand per month to maintain.

Beware the SEO Jargon to keep you in the Dark I was given detailed quotes which were broken down with confusing terminology and to be honest I didn't understand what any of the jargon meant or how it would help. I know now that this was the whole point, to keep me ignorant. They would make "finding the right keywords" sound so amazingly difficult and then quote so much for this service.

Exposing SEO Truths Now an expert in SEO myself I can expose these truths. In this article I will focus on the "what to do's" and what not to do's. I will go to town on the SEO firms that play on website owner's ignorance in my next article. But I want to take you through the steps you need to take to make your Website rank well. These are proven methods that have brought great search results for many of our clients.

Learn SEO Before I begin, the real truth is that if you are a programmer or you have a Website with a Content Management System you can optimize your own Website, and keep your website maintained without paying fees. Our SEO services are for those who don't have the time to learn, set up or maintain their Website. Also quality SEO firms are always going to do a better job than you can (as they do this all day everyday).

Step 1 Ok onto step No.1. Start with the right keywords. Research what people are searching for online that is related to your industry. There are websites that will give you this information for nothing. Try the Overture keyword tool, it doesn't count Google but Google has 80% more traffic so just do the math.

Step 2 Set up your Meta Tags correctly. There are websites that will generate these for you. Just do a search on Meta Tag generator. Once you have your Meta Tags (with the correct keywords you gained from Step1). If you don't know how to add or update your Meta tags you will need to talk to a web programmer. It takes 2 minutes so don't let them charge you much for it.

Step 3 Work out your USP (Unique Selling Point), This is the first paragraph of text on your site which should tell visitors who you are and what you do. You must include your keywords in here as Search Engines go here first after the Meta Tags. If you notice in the Search Engines under each listing it shows a potion of text from each site (this is the USP).

In part 2 I will take you through the remaining steps but Steps 1, 2 and 3 should keep you busy and get you off to a good start.
