Checking the health of your chickens should be done constantly to ensure that no diseases can infect them and in order to maintain their health. The comb of the chickens should be firm. It will show signs when your chickens are starting to lay eggs, it will turn bright. A healthy chicken should also have bright beady eyes and the scales on its legs should show no signs of being infested with mites.

A laying chicken should have white colored or pale feet, not yellow. Its body should be plump and not flabby and it should be firm to the touch. See to it that the nose and eyes of the chicken have no discharges because if they do, then the chicken is probably sick and needs care and medication.

The part where the chickens' wastes are discharged from the body called the vent should be healthy and must not show signs of irritation. This is very important because it is here that the eggs also pass so if it is defective, the quality of the eggs would be affected.

If your chickens should stop laying and their feathers should start shedding, you don't have to worry because when chickens are a year old, they usually experience moulting much like the skin shedding of other animals. When this period is done, the chickens will continue to provide eggs for you.

It advised not to clip the chickens' wings when they are moulting and to feed them well because it takes a lot of energy to change feathers and they would need additional nutrients for strength. Laying would stop during this period so you don't have to worry because after this, your chickens will resume their egg laying.

Chickens can also become infested with lice, mites, ticks, and fleas and you need to inspect your chickens regularly for any signs of infestation especially during warm weather. These parasites can quickly multiply so act promptly at the first sign of parasite infestation in your flock. Although these parasites cannot affect humans, they can become a health hazard to your chickens if it becomes worst.

To help in the prevention of diseases, you can give your chickens antibiotics. This, combined with clean fresh water will aid in making them strong. Maintain the cleanliness of the chicken coop to prevent disease from building up in the area. The droppings should be taken care of properly in order to make the area odor free.
