U.s Open - Davenport Holds Up & Wins the First & Second Round
The American tennis player Lindsey Davenport, who recently announced to have a knee injury, was not expected to move into the second round of the US Open which is currently being played in New York City, but the 32-year-old player proved to have plenty of talent and courage by managing a solid victory in two sets 6-4, 6-2 over the Canadian Aleksandra Wozniak.
Davenport believes she has trained very well and she is ready to give it all in her match against Russian rival Alisa Kleybanova, who is currently ranking 34th in the world. The match concluded in Lindsay's favor with a convincing 7-5, 6-3 victory. Presently, Lindsay's ranking is the 23rd position, not bad for an athlete who has had to face different injuries.
Despite her age, Davenport does not think her tennis career will end soon. As we recall, she had taken a leave for more than a year in order to take care of her newborn and only few months later she was already at training camp. Davenport even mentioned in her last interview last Monday at the Opening of the US Open that "Each time I play a grand slam I always think that, 'Oh, this could be my last time playing here."
Davenport's career has been one to remember as from her early days back in 1991 to her first triumphs only a couple of years later she managed a career record of 750 wins and 193 loses, a total of 55 titles of which three were Grand Slams: the 1998 US Open, the 1999 Wimbledon and the 2000 Australian Open, besides her reaching a semi final game at Roland Garros in 1998. Additionally, she obtained the women's singles championship Gold medal during the Olympic Games in Atlanta.
She has been ranked number one in the WTA circuit in eight different occasions, being the last one from October 24, 2005 to January 29, 2006. As a total, she has been World No.1 for 98 weeks in her career.
When Lindsay decided to come back to play tennis professionally once again in July 2007, many of us believed it was just going to be for a short period as her life priorities shifted, but on the contrary, we saw a better and more relax player on the court. She played a first doubles competition at New Heaven, which was kind of a warm up for the American, later she obtained her first singles title win in two years since she took her leave at the Commonwealth Bank Tennis Classic in Indonesia and then she also won in November at the Bell Challenge in Canada, defeating the Ukrainian Julia Vakulenko in the final.
Coming into the 2008 Davenport faced several injuries but her weak point continued to be her knee. She even had to withdraw of the French Open, Wimbledon and more recently from the singles competition at the Olympic Games due to the same discomfort, even though she was able to participate in the Olympics doubles managing to get until the quarterfinals next to her partner Liezel Huber.
Davenport's comings and goings are just now things of the past as she has a brand new challenge ahead which is the highlight of the season finale: the US Open. At the press conference she was very clear to say that she will take the tournament one step at a time as she does not want to add pressure to her recovery and her performance especially due to the fact that she wishes to be healthy, in good shape and play tennis for many more years.
