They rise to the top if they don't self destruct first. Don Imus was on the rise, but he got in his own way. Another one bites the dust. Thank God!

My experience with the man known as "Imus" started when my partner suggested I tune in on those rare nights when I could not sleep. On the west coast he aired in the wee hours of the morning. This sounded good, so I did.

I recall this first viewing vividly. Within the first five minutes I hit the power button. Nothing offered on his show was worth listening to. So I didn't.

The next morning I asked my partner why he listened to this "Imus" garbage and in turn recommends to others. My partner tuned in regularly, since a good nights sleep was illusive. He off-handedly responded that sometimes he has interesting guests.

Really? I reasoned the night I tuned it was an aberration so I decided to give the show another shot. Not only did I give it another shot, I gave it several. Results were the same. Who in their right mind tuned into this guy.

As a fan of Larry King I happen to catch this "Imus" character and spouse on his show. Great, maybe this interview will reveal the real "Imus" and my attitude might change. Nope. My feelings about him only worsened. Here was an older man flaunting his younger wife. How great was she for pushing her lifestyle on at risk children.

Here is what I think. "Imus" lives in the absence of empathy. Despite all his effort to fool the public, I was not persuaded. His words and his actions on his show demonstrated not a care in the world for his invitees. The only opinion that mattered was his own and his guests where left stumbling for a laugh. So the public laughed. I said not funny.

No, I am not shocked by this "Imus" fiasco. Living a life in the absence of empathy and having a big mouth spells disaster. Here is a guy who is clueless what all this fuss is about. His apology is insincere because he has no feelings for others for sincerity. His body language tells the truth as he grappled with the proclaimed "leader" of the culture he offended.

What makes all of this more unbelievable is all the misdirected press this age old story is receiving. We all need to wake up to the fact of that these people from "another world" exist in our lives and act accordingly.

Empathy guides those of this world to speak and act appropriately in kindness towards others. Tagging the "Imus" statement as a race issue begs the question. Empathy is blind to race, creed, or color. It exists in your world or not.

Living in the absence of empathy puts the absentee smack dab in their own way.
