With just a little re-organizing, and maybe a clutter clearing yard sale, you'll be surprised where you can carve out more workable space in your home than you imagined. Once you've opened up 5 feet or so of floor space, the key to designing and defining your newly found office is using elements that seamlessly blend with your homes existing architecture. Unifying the new space with flooring, paint and furnishings can make all the difference in adding a functionally fabulous office.

Scout out your home and identify those underutilized square feet. One of the often overlooked spots is an upstairs' closet that spans the hallway. Unlike a bedroom closet conversion, consider leaving the doors on their hinges so that your new space can be closed off when not in use.

Use every inch of your new found space by installing wall-to-wall cherry cabinets, fresh white open shelving, or create a crisp gallery wall with floating shelves. Be sure to plan out your storage and display needs so that open nooks and cabinets are incorporated into the build. An expanse of laminate or glass running the entire length of the closet will maximize usable countertops corner to corner. Build a low-profile, hinged panel to cover all of your outlets and cords.

To illuminate your space check out low voltage cable lighting systems, an updated alternative to traditional track lighting. Featuring parallel cables that virtually disappear in space, the systems create an illusion of floating lights. Cable lighting provides unobtrusive lighting in areas that are difficult to light. From elegantly simple to retro, designs abound.

A grouping of four square, beveled, ebony framed mirrors hung over the desk opens up the office and lets the light bounce. For a clean, contemporary take on the classic cork board, fit the desk's backsplash with brushed nickel and post your notes with magnetic ease. Pull up an ergonomically contoured, leather- wrapped swivel chair and get to work.
