Bali is known as a tropical beach destination and therefore it may not come as a surprise that almost all popular tourist villages are located right at the beach.
The only exception in this top 5 is a village where you are able to see the Balinese culture around every corner...
So if you plan to travel to Bali, check here if one of these villages will be a Bali desitnation.
# 1: Kuta
This village is probably the most famous on the island. Everybody who travels to Bali has heard it because they want to see it or avoid it. There is not much left of Bali here, instead Kuta is focused on travellers who go on a holiday looking for fun, beach, crazy bali nightlife, great restaurants and many shops.
They have expensive places to stay but also places where you can spend a night for just US$5.
Right next to Kuta you have Legian followed by Seminyak. These villages are connected to each other so you can't really tell when one starts and the other ends.
The only changes that you will see is that the more you head towards Seminyak to more boutiques, fancy restaurants and luxurious villas and spas you will see. Seminyak is focused on fun as well but you do need to spend much more for that here...
#2 Sanur
Sanur is made up of a string of beach resorts and a main road with shops and restaurants. However, unlike Kuta beach Bali things are a bit more relaxed here.
The Sanur travellers are usually a bit older and spend their night enjoying dinner at the beach instead of partying till dawn. Its a really nice place with a clean beach and calm water. So if you stay at a Bali beach resort here you can easily stroll from your room right to the sea...
#3 Nusa Dua
Nusa Dua was created with one thing in mind, to provide an area where resorts can welcome their guests. And that's actually what it is.
In Nusa Dua you can only find 4 or 5 star Bali beach resorts with big pools. If you want to relax in luxury all day then this is the place to go. But expect to eat at the reoort or to arrange a taxi to Seminyak for shopping, as outside the Nusa Dua hotel premises you will hardly find facilities.
#4 Ubud
Whenever I go to Bali I always spend a least a couple of days in Ubud Village. If you are looking for culture in a setting full of green vegitation, colourful flowers and relax atmosphere then this is the place to go. In Ubud you can still see the Balinese dressed up for ceremonies and carrying offerings while heading to temples.
It's also a place where you can easily enjoy the beautiful ricefields or river gorges from your hotel balcony, dining table or when taking a stroll. In Ubud you can find many cultural performances, bali courses, musuems, spas, restaurants and of course shops.
#5 Candidasa
This beach village is probably not the most popular, but if I had to choose between the remaining Bali villages then Candidasa might win just slightly. It used to attract many travellers who wanted to spend their holidays in the East of Bali but nowadays the numbers are less. Mainly because Candidasa doesn't have a real beach like the ones in the South.
But from Candidasa you can easily explore the eastern part of Bali where you can find great scuba diving sites, the famous Mount Agung, temples, palaces and great hiking routes. So if you want relax at the pool but be active as well then Candidasa is a good place to stay.
