What is the CE mark? If you are planning to expand your business to the European countries then you must have your product CE marked. Every country has certain safety and quality standards that should be met by any manufacturer who wishes to sell his goods in that country. The CE marking is such type of foreign standard used by the European Union (EU). All the 27 nations that constitute the EU allow the products having the CE approval to enter their markets. Also the countries forming the EFTA (European Free Trade Association) require the products to have the CE marking.

The letters CE stand for the French word "Conformite Euopeene" which means "European Conformity". Instead of CE marking, the term "CE mark" was used initially but was replaced by the former in the European Commission's Directive 93/68/EEC introduced n the 1993. CE marking is nothing but a declaration by the manufacturer claiming that his product satisfies all the safety requirements laid down by the EC's Directives. These Product Directives have enlisted all the essential requirements and the performance levels to which any product must conform

This mark ensures safety to the consumer from the product. The CE marking system was introduced by the EU to remove the various trade barriers between the member countries of the EU community. If you want to sell your product in four countries of the EU, then you do not have to get your product tested to meet the standards of all the individual countries. You can simply get your product tested for the CE marking and can sell it anywhere in the EU community and in the EFTA markets. This has thus facilitated the trade in the EU. All these standards have been given by the various European standard agencies like CENELEC, CEN, etc.

There are many other advantages also of using the CE marking system. It indicated to the European governmental officials that the product can now be sold in the European markets. CE marking also ensures the free movement of the product within the EU countries and the EFTA community markets. Also CE marking helps the EU officials to remove any product from the market that does not conform to the safety standards. Thus it helps in implementing the quality and safety control in the European markets. Due to the above mentioned advantages of the CE marking, every manufacturer eyeing the European market must get his product CE certified.
