Cure for the Winter Blahs

With the holidays past and nothing but dreary weather ahead, the dreaded winter blahs could easily descend on many of us. No more festive parties, no more frantic shopping sprees, and no more Christmas caroling to offer fun and excitement, only cold winter nights and long endless days.

Of course the snowbirds vacationing in warm climates and the skiers, who love spending hours on powdered slopes won't mind at all. And many people, ward off those unpleasant blues by immersing themselves in interesting hobbies, such as painting, ice fishing, quilting, bowling, or any other activity that suits their fancy.

That's all well and good you might think, but what about those of us who won't be traveling or don't have a hobby. The prospects look gloomy. But don't despair. There is a fun and exciting alternative that most everyone can enjoy. Best of all, it is only a computer click away, and may even be profitable - a contest on the Internet. As the web abounds with contests of every kind, you can surely find one that appeals to your special interests, abilities, or age.

Since most all new parents snap endless pictures of their new babies and young children, submitting a cute or funny photo to anyone of the many contests on the web could result in winning a prize of hundreds of dollars. If you like to write, you will discover contests for sports stories, poetry, short stories, etc., and even a contest from Amazon.com, in which peers choose the winners, who will be published and sold on Amazon.com. There are also recipe contests, kids contests, and trivia contests, plus hundreds of free give-away sites and sweepstake sites. A simple search on Google or Yahoo for a specific type of contest will start you in the right direction. Or you can search for lists of contests on the web as well.

With so many contests and so little time, the hours will pass quickly as you, and perhaps your family, pursue this exciting new venture and it's doubtful that the winter blahs will have a chance to compete before spring and nice weather arrive.
