SEO Your Blog the Right Way

With well over 100 million blogs online, it's certainly not easy to get noticed. But blogging is inherently SEO friendly. Why? Because search engines look for fresh content. And if you're using your blog correctly (i.e. you're updating it consistenly) then getting great SEO results is just a matter of time.

One good way to differentiate yourself is to find a niche. Even if you're in a crowded industry, you have to search out niches within that industry.

This is where SEO comes in. The first thing you must do is target the keywords your customers, or potential customers, are using to find solutions in your industry. Keywords are, well, key. You want to select keywords that are popular and relevant to your site. At the same time, you don't want to target what I call crowded keyword markets.

For example, let's say you're a shoe seller. Now, the keyword "shoes" is big...too big. Even if you blogged for years you probably wouldn't be able to compete for that term. Look at your shoe business and find something you can differentiate yourself with. Are you the largest shoe seller in the county? Do you make custom boots? This may seem trivial but it's absolutely necessary if you want your blog to rank well in the search engines.

There are some excellent free tools on the internet that will help you choose the right keywords. Once you have settled on your keywords, try to include them in the titles of your blog posts as well as in the content itself. Here's a secret on how to write keyword rich content--don't focus on the keywords. The worst thing you can do is focus so closely on your keyword terms that you sound like Frankenstein. Write like you know what you're talking about. If you know what you're talking about, you'll use the right words.

Another technique is to link to posts within your own content from other posts. Your content should point to other content that would be beneficial to your visitor. Remember, write for your audience. You'll sound natural and your information will actually be informative and well received.

However, far more important is encouraging others to link to your blog. How do you do that? With content of course! Produce content that is informative, original, entertaining or even shocking. Natural links from other websites are golden when it comes to search engine optimization.

Also, if you find that a particular post is popular and attracting comments, consider rewriting it in article format and submitting to article directories. Other websites will be allowed to use your article for free, but will have to include a link to your site and some information about you with the article. This will boost your profile and create more popularity within the search engines.

Finally, update often. Search engines give higher rankings to websites that are updated regularly, so try to post at least once every two or three days.

These are quick methods to help your blog climb the search engine page rankings. However, don't expect magic right away. SEO takes time. Forget visitor counts. Focus on providing good content and you will be successful.
