Christmas Craft Ideas - Make Your Own Family Traditions and Memories
Over the years,we have seen llamas, a large pig with her new brood of babies, lambs, donkeys, horses etc. One year, the "guest of honour"was the very (huge) ox that had appeared in the latest Harry Potter film !
The weather is always cold (for England, anyway) with the icy wind whistling through the barn that holds the traditional decorations, holly wreaths, bunches of mistletoe, willow baskets, fresh free range eggs and huge sacks of potatoes - all for sale.
Once a tree has been chosen, the students specially employed for the Christmas holiday, prepare it for transport and help to tie it onto the roof rack.
Every December since the children were born, we have bought our Christmas tree from this farm and spent time with the animals so that It has now become a family tradition - the children are now teenagers and one nearly a teenager, but they would not dream of going anywhere else.
Christmas is a time for tradition and family. Each family can make traditions and memories like these that children will remember when they are grown and perhaps have children of their own.
Another tradition in our home concerns the Christmas decorations especially those on the tree. I know many people have immaculately colour co-ordinated decorations with nothing out of place. Our Christmas tree however is not quite like that !
From the time each of our children started nursery school at the age of three, they have brought home lovingly handmade decorations such as angels, snowmen, stars etc. which we decorated the tree with. I always discreetly labelled each decoration with the child's name and age and carefully packed them away on the 12th night, ready to take out for next Christmas. This continued throughout primary school.
My children enjoy making things so at home, we would get out the glass paints, rubber stamps stencils and make more decorations. My 13 year old daughter is now adept at using my embroidery machine to embroider christmas motifs onto fabric and then make them into lovely padded shapes to hang from the tree.
Everything the children (and myself) have made throughout the past 15 years is hung on the tree. The decorating does not look professional at all but every item means something to us and brings back many memories. You can see the progression in abilities and every piece is cherished and talked about. Things don't have to be perfect to be treasured and loved.
