Its hard to put into words the career Tiger Woods has had on the PGA Tour. From watching him win three consecutive US Amateur Championships, lapping the field in the 1997 Masters, or winning the 2006 Open Championship while using his driver once during the whole tournament. For Tiger winning is everything. But it not just winning it's winning the major championship. So here are my Top 5 Reasons Why Tiger Woods Will Win the 2007 US Open.
1. Even though he tied for 2nd at The 2007 Masters Tiger was unsatisfied because to Tiger 2nd place is not a win. His barometer for success is wins. He may look back at rounds one and three because he bogied the last two holes each day and lost momentum he had gained earlier in the round and lost important momentum going into the second and final rounds.
2. Not winning The Masters Tiger will have less pressure from the press about a potential Tiger Slam. If he would have won The Masters he would need to win The US Open to win his 2nd Tiger Slam (winning four consecutive Major championships).
3. In July Tigers Woods will have a major life moment. He and his wife are expecting their first child. Because of the due date Tiger may miss the Open Championship. Chances are the 2007 US Open will be the last major he will play before his child is born. Tiger does have a flair for the dramatic so it would surprise me if does win in memorable fashion.
4. Better prepared. Comparatively speaking Tiger Woods has played more since The 2007 Masters compared to after the 2006 Master. On May 3rd, 2006 Tiger's father Earl passed away after battling cancer. Tiger did not play between the 2006 Masters and the 2006 US Open. The 2006 US Open was the only tournament where I believe TIger was not mentally prepared to compete and he subsequently missed the cut. The US Open is one of the most mentally gruelling tournament to play due to the extreme playing conditions the USGA imposes on the players.
5. He is hottest of the top five World Ranked player in the world. He has been in the top 10 in over 80% of the tournaments he has played in this year. Where as Jim Furyk has a top ten percentage of 30%, 36% for Phil Mickelson, 28.5% for Adam Scott and 12.5% for Ernie Els. Of these Top 5 golfers Tiger leads the new Fed Ex Cup Points with 16,598 points in 6 event while his closest competitor is Phil Mickelson 10,868 points who has played 11 events.
One omission from the top five was the fact that he missed the cut last year. Which was the first cut he has missed at a major tournament since he turned professional.
Will he win? Will he miss the cut again this year? Tell me what you think? Leave comments on the blog.
