Issuer identification number (IIN) - The first six digits of the credit card number are known as the Issuer Identification Number (IIN) previously known as Bank Identification Number (BIN). These identify the institution that issued the card to the card holder. The rest is allocated by the issuer. Cards are issued by the issuer through an issuing network. Many issuers print the first four digits of the IIN on their card, just beneath where the number is embossed, as an added security measure.

Card types are:
-credit
-debit
-charge
-stored-value
-Electronic Benefit Transfer
The IIN ranges used by the major schemes are:
-Visa: start with a 4.
-MasterCard: start with the numbers 51 through 55.
-American Express: begin with 34 or 37.
-Diners Club: begin with 300 through 305, 36 or 38. There are Diners Club
cards that begin with 5. These are a joint venture between Diners Club and MasterCard,
and are processed like a MasterCard.
-Discover: begin with 6011 or 65.
-JCB: begin with 2131, 1800 or 35.

An IIN lookup tool has many important real-world applications. It is used by organizations that process credit card payments to combat fraud and to enforce country-specific policies, by the government to investigate indentity theft, by financial institutions to identify various security issues, and so on.
