The Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Giants left New York to make their new home in California, sometimes in 1957. This left New York City without any National League Franchise. Two years later, on July 27, 1959, William A. Shea, an attorney announced the formation of the Continental League, the third league after the long established American and the National Leagues.

The following year, in 1960, Shea and the other organizers of the Continental League agreed with the two long established Leagues to abandon the new league. In exchange, four new franchises, two each in the established Leagues, were created. One of the franchise in the National League, created on March 6, 1961, was later to become the New York Mets. This franchise was officially known as The New York Metropolitan Baseball Club Inc.

After having considered names, such as Bees, Burros, Continentals, Skyscrapers, Jets, Skyliners and Meadowlarks - on March 8, 1961, it was announced that the team would be known as the New York Mets. The New York Mets is based at Flushing, Borough of Queens, New York City and play in the Eastern Division of the National League. It is the second of the two Major League Baseball teams from New York. The other team is the New York Yankees.

The First Losses And The First Win

The New York Mets lost both their first away and their first home games in their franchise history. On April 11, 1962, they lost their first away game 11-4 to the Cardinals at St. Louis. A couple of days later, on April 13, 1962, they lost their first home game - played at the Polo Grounds - to the Pirates, 4-3.

The New York Mets won 9-1 for the first time in their franchise history, an away game in Pittsburgh, on April 23, 1962.

Home Of The Mets

Deciding to build a new home for the Mets, initially named the Flushing Meadows Park, the ground was broken on October 28, 1961. Costing $28.5 million, the new home of the Mets took 29 months to build. Later on, it was decided to honor William A. Shea for bringing the National League Baseball to New York, by naming this Park after him.

The Shea Stadium was the first stadium that had underground tracks on which motor operated stands could be moved to help convert the Stadium from the baseball configuration to the football configuration. The Shea Stadium opened on April 17, 1964, with an inaugural game, which the Mets lost 4-3 to the Pirates. However, on September 24, 1969, the New York Mets won their first National League East Championship in front of their home supporters at Shea, by beating the Cardinals, 6-0.
