Spider Phobia - Do The Treatments Need To Be So Terrifying? The Spiders Are Frightening Enough.

If you've read many articles and resources about spider phobias, you're no doubt aware of the mainstream methods that are available. The treatments I'm talking about are what I call the "Face Your Fear" methods.

For some reason, they seem to aim these techniques at spider phobia sufferers more than any other group of people. The problem with these treatments is not their effectiveness. They work in most cases. But the trouble is no one wants to try them.

And the people who recommend these interventions have difficulties understanding why this is. ABC News, Australia quotes one particular researcher, Allison Matthews from the University of Tasmania, declaring that, "...many do not seek treatment because it is too costly or difficult to access."

To be honest, Allison's correct that quite a few do not seek treatment. But I've spoken to a good number of phobia sufferers who have declined this treatment method, and I don't believe the reasons she gives tell the full story. I think it's linked to the nature of the method she utilizes. All of these treatments are based on facing your fear. With some it's gradual, bit by bit, and with others it's all at once.

This reluctance might also have something to do with the terrible names they think up for these traetments; like Exposure, Implosion, Flooding, and Systematic Desensitisation. They sound more like methods for extracting confessions than interventions for helping people get over phobias.

Facing your fear to get over your fear basically seems primitive to me; somewhat similar to catching an illness in order to become immune to it. It works, but you'll find far better means to do it. It's not really that surprising so few phobia sufferers go for it. It's asking too much of them.

The Most Significant Hurdle Of Just About Any Treatment Is Persuading People To Actually Use It

And when the very people you're attempting to help will not come to see you, you can't then stand up and profess how well it works and how superb it is.

The good thing is that facing the fear is now absolutely unnecessary. There are numerous approaches that get rid of the fear without forcing you to confront the one thing you are frightened of. You will find superior effective treatment methods offered, which are well documented and tested. It's hard to turn on your own telly lately without seeing a person having their phobia fixed right before your own eyes.

The 7-step treatment I employ accesses the fear memory and deletes the horrid sensations completely, just before it turns into a long-term memory again. After this there's no more fear whenever you remember, or even come face to face with, whatever it was that used to appear so frightening.

Of course, it's important to test your fear after any therapy. But this really should not be the basis of the actual treatment itself. And it should only occur after the fear has evaporated.
