Dog is a lovable animal and the Pomeranian or Pom is one of most attractive and feathery little dog. The breed was originated from Germany. People love to have a Pomeranian because of its fox-like alert face. The Pomeranian dog breed is known to be successor of Spitz and remained a favorite breed for high class people. The popularity of Pom was increased in the time when Queen Victoria and other high society people like Marie Antoinette and Mozart had taken ownership of it.
There is a big difference between the Pomeranian of today and past; in the past it was big, weighing in approximately 30 pounds. However, today Pom is much smaller with very less weight. The reason of it is the love of Queen Victoria for smaller dogs and the size of this breed was reduced by means of selective breeding.
The Pomeranian appears to be a fluff ball because of long and orderly coat. The Pomeranian can be found in different coat color like blue, white and black brown. Moreover, Pom is also found in bi-colors. With little & erect ears and almond-shaped eyes, Pom looks very witty and alert.
The Pomeranian loves to learn, as it is very active and animated dog. The breed is famous for its loyalty with the owner. Though, it is a small breed but it is very brave, curious and joyful. The Pomeranian never thinks twice to handle a big dog whenever required. Due to its snappy and anxious nature, the Pomeranian is not suggested for families that have little children who do not know how to treat it. However, for teenagers and adults, this is an exciting dog.
As it is a small breed, it can barely go above 12 inches in height and 7 pounds in weight. There are certain problems regarding behavior and health in every breed; same is the case with the Pomeranian, as it may have heart problems, skin issues, eye diseases, early teeth losing issues, and luxating patella risk.
One great thing about the Pomeranian is its adaptability which makes it a perfect dog to have. It can live in an apartment or a house with big garden. The breed likes attention and as long as it gets company, it remains happy.
All dogs need some kind of exercise and so as the Pomeranian. The breed likes to go on a walk or likes to play in the garden with the owner. Healthy exercise is very important and the dog must have it on regular basis. The nutrition is also very crucial for the Pomeranian, but the good thing is that it does not require special diet. Dry food is suggested for the breed because of its tooth loss problems. Always feed the dog in small amount as it is a small dog, but plenty of clean water is good for its health.
Fifteen years is a normal life expectancy of this breed. However, healthy Pomeranians can go over this age very easily. For healthy living of this breed, it is advisable to consult with a vet on regular basis. Eyes and dental checkup is very crucial for this breed. The owner must also brush the coat of the Pomeranian regularly. This would take much time, but it is essential to maintain the luxurious coat of the Pomeranian.
Breeding of the Pom must be done by professional breeders who have great experience in breeding. However, if someone can take the job of breeding, he should follow certain guidelines to have healthy puppies.
