As we love our newly whitened smile we ask could our teeth get even whiter and for some people this becomes an obsessive conquest to see how white they will go.

Once you have removed the staining from the teeth the end result in typically a much brighter smile that looks impressive but the key is not to get carried away and try and over whiten the teeth because it cannot happen.

Great improvements in self confidence are gained after whitening as well as people testify that being able to smile without a hand placed in front of the mouth makes smiling so much more fun. This will also mean any friends old new will be greeted with a wonderful smile which looks bright and healthy looking.

Sometimes though we can take it too far as we want to make the teeth even whiter and for many this is not possible. Once the staining is removed from the enamel you are left with your natural colour of the teeth and this cannot be over-whitened. The reason for this is that underneath the enamel lies the dentin and this cannot be whitened due its position within the tooth's core structure.

A great example of this is when you see a tooth that has had an impact and has turned grey or black in colour. This change means the tooth has died and this colour is emitted through the enamel but the issue lies in the dentin and will not be whitened.

If after tooth whitening you have some very deep staining in the teeth then it is possible to keep whitening but little point in doing this too quickly. The best advice is to keep using a good quality home kit type product once every six to ten weeks after having your teeth whitening treatment. Not only will this keep the teeth looking white and will remove any future staining but will carry on the whitening but over a manageable time period that is not going to hurt the teeth, gums or soft tissues in the mouth.

Laser teeth whitening is a good example of where the bulk of the staining in removed in just one treatment of around sixty to seventy minutes but if you have very deep staining then it is possible that some of the staining will be residing very deep and be stubborn in the teeth and will require a longer treatment course and this is where the home kit solution works well in conjunction with the laser system.

Younger people tend not to get this deep staining as their age will ensure the teeth do not change to a dark yellow colour like what happens when we get older and the aging process occurs. Either way teeth whitening will work for you but look at this as a lifetime journey and a not a sprint as you need to keep the great looking smile that you have invested time and money in so good luck and don't get obsessed!
