So How Well Did Radiohead Do With "In Rainbows?"

Remember our recent post about the new Radiohead CD being released online only? One of the more interesting aspects about that story was that the band let all of us, the consumers, decide how much we were willing to pay for the music. Well, a survey has been released regarding just how well that idea went - 62% of all downloaders world wide opted to pay nothing. Of the rest that willingly paid, the average selling price was $6.00.

Clearly, if you ask folks to determine the market value for you, then that will fall somewhere between zero and not much. Having said that, perhaps Radiohead stays in the business of offering all of their new music on their own, for the average price of $6 per CD? That would still be - by a wide, wide margin - far more than they would earn under the thumbs of any of the major record labels.

I think it also has to be considered that the majority of us have begun to feel a real impact in our wallets lately due to the state of current economic affairs. Still all in all, it was a bold move by an artist as established as Radiohead to even attempt - and I hope they will consider remaining independent, where most of us will pay a fair and reasonable price for good quality work.
