You can easily and effectively get free traffic to your website using techniques that do not constitute spamming, but use other people websites. This technique enlists the help of forums.

The first thing you need to do is go out on the internet and find forums with the same (or similar) topic of your website. This will mean you are targeting your advertisement to people who are interested in your product or service, and therefore any traffic you get will be targeted, and you will have more chance at converting hits to revenue. This also helps with Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) as it is a backlink from a site similar to the content of yours.

The way you will be advertising is in your forum signature. You need to make a catchy, and SEO friendly, link. To change your signature, the form can usually be found in either your profile editing page, or user control panel. The format for forum-based hyperlinks are as follows: Your Text

Now the point here is to use your knowledge of the subject of your website to "win" the traffic. The effect you are looking to gain is the over-awe of the other users. Basically, the more knowledgable you are, the more people will want to visit your site, and the more trustworthy your site becomes. Also, obviously, the more you post - the more links you get.

Even if you do not know much about your chosen subject there is an answer, well, Yahoo Answers to be specific. Use this valuable resource to your advantage. You can go onto Yahoo answers, ask a question, and get a whole array of informative answers from people that know, then just transfer that information into your posts on the forums you reside on. This also helps you, making you look like an expert in your field, therefore making you, and your product/service appear much more trustworthy.

Good Luck!
