Whether you are a Consultant, Staff Grade Level Doctor, SpR or SHO you may consider undertaking locum work in your career.

Some important questions that need to be considered before entering into a locum job are:

- How much will you get paid?
- Will you get paid weekly?
- Will your expenses be covered such as accommodation & travel?
- Will you get regular work and ongoing hours?
- Will you get holiday pay?
- What are the benefits of working as a Locum?

I'm sure you may have considerations beyond the above list but I want to focus this article on what I consider to be the main points when looking for locum jobs anywhere in the UK.

How much will you get paid?

As a rule, locum pay rates vary depending on your skills and experience. Staff Grade Level Locums will get paid more than SHOs for example. Levels of pay can also be dependent on whether you choose to work in the NHS or private sectors and whether medics in your particular discipline are in short supply. Locum Recruitment Agencies will also offer different rates of pay so it's worth scouting around!

Will you get paid weekly?

Depending on which Locum Recruitment Agency you work with will depend on when you get paid.

Will your expenses be covered?

Reputable Locum Recruitment Agencies normally cover expenses such as accommodation & travel.

Will you get regular work & ongoing hours?

This will depend on a number of factors including the contracts that Locum Recruitment Agencies have with their clients and how flexible you are prepared to be with shift patterns.

Will you get holiday pay?

When you register with a Locum Recruitment Agency, they will advise you of your holiday entitlement

What are the benefits of working as a Locum?

Choosing to work as a Locum Doctor either temporarily or in an ongoing capacity can be a great way to see different parts of the UK. It is also a good way to work in different healthcare environments and expand on your previous experience. Another clear benefit is that you are able to work as little or as much as you like, allowing for a work/life balance that suits your individual needs.
