Businesses Need To Protect Their Employees More In Case Of A Car Breakdown

The AA the UK's largest motoring organisation has stated that companies need to be more aware of the dangers that could face an employee should they breakdown on the UK's roads. The AA have been advising the British public of motoring issues for over 100 years now and is seen as a major contributor to the development of safety on the UK roads. Many businesses employ staff that are constantly driving on British motorways, quite roads or even inner centre areas that do not have sufficient training of what to do should their vehicle breakdown. This could be a potentially dangerous situation in certain situations, like say in the dark.

The AA now state that the most risky place to breakdown in your car is no longer the motorway, but inner city centres due to the increase of motor related crime in these areas. Typically the motorway was originally deemed as the most dangerous place to breakdown, but the message seems to have got out to stay on the embankment in an emergency, in this case education has won the day.

However the AA still feels that companies need to educate their employees more in what to do in certain situations areas should they breakdown whilst at work. Maintenance is also high on the list, regular servicing will mean less breakdowns, focusing on the issues that will most likely lead to a failure such as batteries, tyre pressure etc. Clearly prevention is better than cure in their minds.

Of course breakdown cover should always be a consideration within all businesses that do a lot of business miles. As well as the potential cost saving should a breakdown occur in time, recovery costs and lost business, there is also the safety of the employee to take into consideration. Having a patrolman there to assist, normally within the hour must surely be important to most companies and of course the employee.

Letting people know where you are going, the route you are taking and also what time you intend to be back is also mentioned by the AA. They also suggest that employees should carry a mobile phone, to inform someone where they are. Further advice is of course that they should never use the phone whilst driving unless you have a suitable hands free device.

If you were to breakdown trying to ensure you are parked in a well-lit area, use your hazard lights where possible and keep your doors locked is further advice. And of course do not show any valuables within your person or vehicle or give reason for any potential unscrupulous person to take advantage of the situation.

The AA again mentions that more attention should be made towards the safety of its drivers. Breakdown cover is more than a get you home service, it can be the difference of keeping a client, keeping your recovery costs down, getting your employee home but most importantly, can prevent crime and improve the safety of all employees, which must be important.

All common sense really, but often not heeded until the worst happens.
