Alternative energy is often used to describe many things other than fossil fuels. You will also find this falls into the category of renewable energy.
Renewable forms of energy are Earth Friendly and are a much cleaner option than fossil fuels. Renewable resources are exactly what the name implies, renewable, therefore these sources will never run out or become as costly as fossil fuels have.
It's just a matter of time before major energy companies begin their switch from fossil fuels to these alternative methods of energy.
There are many different types of renewable energy, to name a few, solar, geothermal, wind power, hydro-electric and biomass. All these alternatives have one thing in common, they don't contribute to the greenhouse gases and are environmentally safe.
Solar power is used to capture the heat and sunbeams to produce heat and electricity. This is a source of energy we can count on for thousands of years to come.
Wind energy has been around for thousands of years. The wind has been used to power water pumps, grind grain and even used to power sawmills. Today electricity is produced from wind towers that are providing clean and economical electricity.
Hydro-electric power, like wind power has been around for many years. For a long time now hydro-electric power plants have been used to supply electricity and heat our homes. Micro-hydro is becoming more popular today as many home owners living near small rivers and streams are producing electricity to power their homes.
Biomass is a very Earth friendly way of producing fuel. biomass means any plant derived organ matter available on a renewable basis. This organic matter includes energy crops and trees, agricultural food and feed crops, agricultural crop waste and residue, wood waste and residue, aquatic plants, and animal and municipal waste materials.
These are just some of the ways biomass fuels are being produced today, many more techniques are becoming available as research goes on. Biomass fuels are a great way in saving our environment from becoming over taken by greenhouse gases.
