Jewish Book Festival Begins

Marnie at Beyond Robson announces the JCCGV’s annual Jewish Book Festival in honour of International Jewish Book month. Starting tomorrow, the book festival runs until Nov 29th. “The Opening Night Gala features the brilliant and talented Howard Jacobson. Known for his literary humour, the British author arrives for an exclusive interview with CBC personality and writer, Eleanor Wachtel. The event will be recorded live for broadcast on CBC Radio One’s Writers and Company.

In the post, Marnie states that the festival “prides itself on providing diverse events to suite all tastes and ages.” From Michael Ross' “riveting account” working within the Mossad to best-selling author Nicole Krauss. Events include a panel on mental health, writing workshops, children's events, cooking demonstrations, a poetry brunch and a spoken word slamfest. The blogger has tickets to give away if interested.

Canucks vs. Blues Tonight!

In Waiting for Stanley, a Canucks hockey blog, the writer gives us a pre-view of the upcoming Canucks vs. Blues game.  The Blues and Canucks are tied for wins and the Blues have won 4 out of their 5 last games, slightly better than Vancouver. “The Canucks are better over their last 10 games, with a 6-2-2 record. The Blues are 5-5-0.” Who should we watch for in this game? Brad Boyes and Paul Kariya, according to the blogger. “Boyes is flourishing in St. Lou with 12 goals, 4 assists in 19 games this season.
Paul Kariya is … leading the Blues in scoring with 5 goals and 15 assists in 19 games.”

According to the post, “Krajicek may sit out tonight as he took a puck in the same foot that he injured before in the game against the Wild.” Mike Brown is also sitting out and the decision regarding Sami Salo will come at game time. “The Canucks are semi-rolling. They stay in games even when their effort isn't always up to par… Should be a great game with all that skill out there.”

West Coast Sweeps CFL Awards

Over at Twelve Men on the Field, a recent post reports on the western sweep of the CFL awards. Five of the six awards given at Roy Thompson Hall went to members of the BC Lions, “who won’t be playing in Sunday’s Grey Cup, but will have plenty of items to take back with them to British Columbia after this weekend.” Cam wake picked up two awards, “Outstanding Defensive Player” and “Rookie of the Year,” Rob Murchy received an award for “League’s Best Offensive Lineman” Ian Smart picked up the trophy for “Top Special Teams Player,” and Jason Clermont was voted “Top Canadian.”

The post gives kudos to Kerry Joseph, who took away Most Outstanding Player, the first Saskatchewan Roughriders player to win the top honour since quarterback Ron Lancaster in 1976. It was “a well deserved award for the Riders on field leader.” For the Lions, the awards night memories will fade… “On Sunday, when that fourth quarter gun sounds, they’ll be handing out the main attraction, the Grey Cup.” For Joseph, he’s still got 90 minutes of play.

Langley Schools Reorganized

A recent post on Langley Free Press has Susan Semonick wondering where School Disctrict will get the finances to pull off all their plans for special needs kids. They’re in for a “tidal wave” of changes over the next few years. “They are considering placing a stand-alone middle school in the Aldergrove area… [and] those in the know suggest that Betty Gilbert Elementary… [which] I understand has no room for expansion, is being considered for the middle school.” Whichever school they intend to use, it will reduce Aldergrove Secondary Community School’s enrollment to 50% capacity.

In the post, Semonick asks, “Do they have a plan to fill the rest of the building?” She doesn’t see the solution as addressing this concern or the concern about cohert size, “one of the key factors put forth in moving HDS students to LSS.” ACSS being left half-empty could mean DW Poppy will close, “because those families have the ability to transport their children to Aldergrove or LSS.” In addition, there has been a reported lack of funds for teachers, possibly as much as 1.6 million. “So, how can they possibly make this a go without making major cuts in all other schools’ programs?”
