The House Of Theseus

Located close to the House of Dionysus, The House of Theseus is another excellent location for viewing mosaics.  This house was built during the second half of the 2nd century AD and remained in use until the 7th century AD.  It is said to have been built on the ruins of other ancient villas and houses dating back to the Hellenistic period.

The House of Theseus would have been a large villa which consisted of more than 100 rooms.  It was most likely the residence of the Governor of Cyprus at the time.  Many of the rooms in this villa would have been covered with mosaic floors.  There were also four porticos and three of these were also covered with mosaics and geometric mosaics.

In the south wing of the House of Theseus there are three rooms with floors that are covered in mosaics.  These mosaics all have human representations and depict different phases.  The oldest mosaic here is Theseus and the Minotaur which dates back to the end of the 3rd century AD and has been restored throughout the years.  There is also a mosaic from the end of the 4th century AD which shows Poseidon and Amphitrite.  In one of the reception rooms of this villa you will find part of a 5th century mosaic that depicts Achilles' first bath.

The most famous mosaic in the House of Theseus is a large round mosaic that illustrates Theseus' battle with the Minotaur which results in the killing of the Minotaur.  The House of Theseus is an extremely interesting place to visit and one that provides plenty of interesting sights.

The House of Theseus also includes a small local museum which is open to the public on Tuesdays.  The House of Theseus is located beside the House of Dionysus where you can see more magnificent floor mosaics.  The House of Theseus is open to the public everyday.

A holiday in Paphos would not be complete without visiting the House of Theseus and seeing how the wealthy governors lived during ancient times.  You also get to see the art of mosaics at their finest.
