Civil Conversations

What a contrast the non-debate between McCain and Obama was. How refreshing to see the men answer questions, not attacking each other, but sharing who THEY ARE so we can make some valid decisions on who we want to vote for in November. But the shocker is that the forum under which it was conducted was hosted by a CHURCH! Now, where in the hell (metaphorically speaking of coruse), has the church been until now? Hopefully, the secular media can take a clue and a hint and see how differences can be handled in a civil manner.

Hats off to Rick Warren and Saddleback church!

The rap against the church has been that it is out of date, and is more interested in answering questions that no one is asking. But, here we had the church asking pertinent and serious questions that extend beyond the vernacular of theology. The church was shown as interested in something other than just abortion or homosexual questions.

Cool!

From their views on abortion to their greatest moral failings, Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain used much different styles to tackle the same tough questions at Saturday night's forum on faith. Obama struck a conversational tone and directed his answers toward moderator Rick Warren. McCain gave straightforward responses, taking a more personal approach as he directed his answers toward the audience and viewers at home.

The church has lost the cpacity to hold a meaningful and non-judgmental dialogue with the world. But, maybe, just maybe the Saddleback event gives hope and a vision as to a role that the church can play. We're living in a time of crisis for the institutional church, but a golden opportunity for the spiritual communities that want to address teh realities of life and put sin management on the back burner, if not on the shelf entirely.

We are all sinners, who needs the reminder?

We are all saints, and we all need to be reminded of that fact.
