This way you will be able to see what you are planning on carving. When creating pumpkin carving designs, you are better off to trace the design onto the pumpkin so you will know where to carve.
If you make a mistake and carve out the wrong piece of the pumpkin, do not fret. Allow the piece to dry and then put it back in place with super glue. This should hold it for the life of the pumpkin. After a pumpkin is carved, it will generally last about a week or two before it must be tossed away.
Around this time, the pumpkin will start to rot, although you can cover it with shellac and keep it for a few weeks longer.
