Other than the lives of you and your family, your home is your most valuable asset. You may own it or rent it, but it is still your "castle". In medieval days there were moats to protect the castle. What are the "moats" of today that keep thieves and predators out?

The first thing people think of is insurance. Insurance is a post violation remedy. It helps to fix or replace assets and health after the fact. You need to take steps to protect your assets before insurance is required. There are simple, inexpensive, common sense ways to protect your home.

• Get to know your neighbors and look out for each other. Call the police when you notice something unusual.

• Make your home look like there is somebody home. Bring in the mail and newspapers or have somebody do it for you if you are away. Keep the yard clean, trim the bushes, mow the lawn, and water the flowers. Have random lights turn on and off if you are away.

• Lock your doors and windows. Lock your car.

• Make sure emergency responders can find your home. Your house or apartment number should be prominently displayed on your mail box, door, or house.

• Plant bushes in front of windows that would make it difficult for intruders to enter or see into the house.

• Invest in security lights, cameras, alarms and/or listening devises. A source for these items is http://www.safetyzoneprotection.com.
