Sub Pop Goes Digital

Sub Pop records, home of some of the biggest names in Indie music (Iron & Wine, Band of Horses, The Shins, Rogue Wave) have announced that they have opened their own digital store. The files will be in 192k MP3 format, and playable on any portable player. As a nice additional touch, once you have purchased your music, you can return and download it again (and again?) should you somehow choose "delete" instead of rename on that folder of tunes.

As of this morning, they have about 200 full length albums available as digital downloads. According to their web site, they'll also be making EP's, singles, and eventually rare out of print titles available as well. The digital downloads will be priced at $9.90 for full length releases. Some of the early feedback on their site already includes complaints about charging nearly $10 for files ripped to 192k, and they have a valid point. Anything less than 320k sounds pretty hollow to most avid listeners - and even that can't touch a true lossless format like FLAC. In their defense, Sub Pop is promising that when/if they upgrade the bit rates, folks who purchased 192k files will be offered free upgrades.

Now - if only The Motorhomes, Something For Kate and Kent were Sub Pop artists.....
