Search Engines (especially Google) are the "highway" to the internet. Google loves links... this is why link popularity is so important. If the customers do not find your website, you won't find your checks in the mail.

You're probably wondering why a link is popular. Well, it's very important. Link popularity refers to the ranking assigned to your website by the search engines, and it determines the ranking your page gets when keywords are entered into a search engine.

How do I make my link (web site) popular? Search engines are discretionary, giving status and ranking to sites that have links to their pages from related, quality sites. All the major search engines use this system to rank their pages (Google started it.)

The more searched your keyword is, the more difficult it will be to achieve link popularity. But don't be discouraged; there are ways of achieving link popularity using the most competitive keywords.

There are a few things you should be aware of before going about linking. The 1st thing is that just linking with a large number of websites will not achieve link popularity. As a matter of fact, this method can harm you more than help you out. Ever heard of "Link Farms"? Watch out for them, they can get you banned - they are pages containing line after line of unrelated, off topic links. As I said, you can get banned if search engines find you among link farms.

The next thing to keep in mind is the quality of the web site you are linking to. Never link to a page you have worries about your visitors seeing. The last thing you want your website to appear as is low quality and cheap. Linking to sites of poor quality will lower your link popularity.

What you need to do to achieve great link popularity and improve your rankings.

The 1st step, and the fastest way to get started, is to get a listing in a popular directory, such as Open Directory Project (Dmoz.org) and Yahoo. If your site is business-related, you will want to be listed on Yahoo, and despite the fact that it will cost about $300 a year, the money is worth it. If your site is non-commercial, the listing will be free, but it will take time and follow-up to actually get it listed. Open Directory is gives you a free listing whether you are business-related or non-commercial.

Dmoz - You are aiming to get listed in the highest level of appropriate category, and this just takes some common sense. Don't submit to a category that does not specifically relate to your website. Your submission might rejected and you'll have difficulty submitting again. Submit to the RIGHT category and Google as well as Dmoz will love you.

The next step is to locate other quality "theme related" sites that will increase your link popularity. You want to avoid your competitors and look for sites that are useful to your site's visitors. By linking to a related site, you make friends with Google and increase you and the other website's link popularity.

Not all sites want to link to other sites, so you will have to do some research when you are looking for possible linking partners. Google is an excellent starting place for your search. Just type in your relevant keywords, browse through quality sites and contact them regarding a link exchange. After you found a good site, you need to convince them to link to you.

The first thing to do is to add a link on your own links page to their site. This is a essential step and normally has success. After you have added their link, you must contact the webmaster of their site. When sending them a email, tell them immediately (in your title) that you added their link. He/she will then definitely read your email. Make sure you tell them that you visited their site and that you think it has great content and that you think a link exchange can benefit both as well as increase both of your link popularity over time. Give them the address of your links page, and ask them to check out the link for themselves.

Go through this process with as many appropriate web sites as you can find.

Remember to set up a schedule to check your ranking in search engines frequently to see if your link popularity has improved. This is not achievable immediately and it will take some time and some work.

Also remember that the more professional your website looks the better chances (normally good) you have for a immediate, succesful link exchange.
