The best nursing job you can have is the one that meets all your criteria for a job. You get the salary, the car, and the compensated time off, the perfect work environment, no hassle coworkers and candy and ice cream for lunch every day. We all know that only happens in a dream or the movies but never in real life.
So what is the best nursing job in real life? It is the job that makes you eager to go to work most every day. It is the one that no matter how bad the day turns out, it is still a good day at work. It is the job that is challenging and allows you to learn new things all the time. It is the job that allows you to use those new found skills to progress up the ladder or stay in one place if that is your desire.
Finding the best nursing jobs is another matter all together. Finding the best job in nursing will depend on your definition of "best." Maybe best for you is health and dental insurance and compensated time off. Perhaps it is the highest salary possible or flexible working hours. It might even be working in a particular city at a particular facility or under a certain supervisor or physician. As long as the job you choose fits your criteria of "best" for you, is the best nursing job for you.
If salary is at the top of your list and a must have, explore nursing fields to find out what the best paying ones are before you begin nursing school. Your chosen field will dictate what classes you should take. There are many career and employment studies done all the time that will indicate the preferred nursing field and the one that will garner the most income. You may find the highest paid field of nursing is private duty nurse or temporary staff nurse. You might be surprised to find the big bucks are at the administrative or teaching level. As long as you know where the money is, you will be able to craft a career path to take you there.
When deciding on the best job and the must haves of the job, you will have to decide the elements of lesser importance to you. You are going to have to compromise some desires in order to get what you really want. Most rational people will admit that without hesitation. Of course, you might fall into the job of your dreams, but the chance of that happening is so slim, you probably will not even see it.
A career counselor or placement service may be able to help find the best job for you. They will know where to find the elements you want or at least head you in the right direction to find them. They may even negotiate a deal for you as part of their service. How cool will that be, to have representation at the negotiating table, as long as they do not negotiate you out of an opportunity with unrealistic demands.
