There are a number of people who have got their foot in the door by doing an alternative job for a period of time and proving their worth to their employers that way. Some nurses started off as assistants and then retrained as nurses due to people seeing they were good at your job. This lets employers see you are passionate about it and keep up to date without them asking you to do so.
