Travel & Tourism, Morro Jable Tourist Information
Morro Jable is a resort situated on the southern tip of Fuerteventura. The town actually consists of two parts, Jandia, which is the modern resort, and the old fishing village of Morro Jable. Both parts, which merge into one another, are together often referred to as Jandia by many travel brochures. To further confuse things, the peninsular on which the town is situated is also known as 'Jandia'.
Morro Jable is now one of the island's largest resorts, popular with German and British holidaymakers. It is best known for its superb beaches of fine white sand which stretch for several miles. The section of beach close to the lighthouse is known as Playa de Matorral and is suitable for young children. Between Playa de Matorral and the road is a protected area of natural salt marshes.
There is an excellent choice of water sports available at Morro Jable, including windsurfing, sailing and jet skiing. One of the most popular excursions is the catamaran sailing trip around the magnificent Jandia peninsular. A short distance from the resort is the 807-metre Pico de Zarza, the highest point on the island. Many holidaymakers attempt to climb the mountain - and the superb views from the summit make it worthwhile - although you should go well prepared with food, water and sun hat if you are tempted to have a go.
The main road through the resort is the Avenida del Saladar. Alongside this tree-lined thoroughfare, which runs parallel to the seafront, are various bars, cafes and restaurants. There are also several shopping centres in Morro Jable, the biggest one being the Cosmo Centro Comercial. The Cosmo centre is the resort's focal point; as well as having numerous shops, the complex also hosts the Thursday morning market and is home to the Aloe Vera centre. This is a good place to come if you are suffering from a bit of sunburn - the Aloe Vera oils, which are produced from one of the island's main crops, can really help to soothe the pain.
Most of Morro Jable's nightlife takes place in the pubs around the Cosmo Centre. Although there are a couple of discos in the resort, the action is fairly low key. The area around the old harbour is packed with traditional restaurants offering locally-sourced seafood. There are a variety of restaurants along the promenade serving a range of cuisine, including Chinese, Italian and Canarian.
The 18-hole Jandia Golf Club is situated 3 miles (5km) north of the resort. This par-72 course, designed by Ron Kirby and opened in 2007, benefits from a superb natural setting. As it is fairly challenging, the course is recommended for more experienced players.
Morro Jable is about 55 miles (90km) from Fuerteventura's airport, although a new road which opened in 2005 has reduced transfer times. There are occasional buses from the resort to Caleta de Fuste and the airport. Morro Jable's tourist office is located in the Cosmo Centro Comercial. Maps and information about excursions are both available from here. There are ferry services from Morro Jable to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
