Eczema - What Is It?

Eczema is a form of dermatitis, or an inflammation of the upper layers of the skin. Eczema is characterized by itching, dryness, redness, skin edema, and in the worst cases, blistering, cracking, cracking, flaking and even bleeding. All these characteristics of eczema make it a very uncomfortable and at times embarrassing ailment to have, so a quick cure is what many people are frantically searching for.

The Most Common Types of Eczema

'Atopic Eczema' - this is thought to be hereditary, and is also related to asthma and hay fever.

'Contact Dermatitis' is another common form of which there are two types, allergic and irritant. This type of eczema can be avoided, provided that the substance that is irritating the eczema is totally removed from the person's environment.

'Xerotic Eczema' is simply dry skin that becomes more serious and develops into eczema.

'Seborrhoeic Dermatitis' is likened to dandruff because it causes a dry or greasy scaling of the scalp and eyebrows. It can also produce scaly pimples and redness. This type of eczema is generally curable with correct treatment.

Treatment

Dermatitis is a severe drying out of the skin, so the most common and effective treatment is to use moisturizer to stop the drying of the skin and to retain natural moisture. The use of anything to clean the body that may dry out the skin should be strongly avoided, such as harsh soaps, bubble baths, deodorants and makeup products.

Herbal Medicine

Usually these herbal alternatives are traditional Chinese medicines and western herbalism and there is different treatments suggested from individual to individual, some of the treatments may even be mildly toxic.

Homeopathy

This treatment of eczema aims to remove the underlying cause, by strengthening the immune system. It is generally turned to when other forms of treatment have failed and the sufferer is left with few other choices. However studies have shown that this form of treatment has been successful in 82% of cases in a study done where the patients had been unsuccessful with medical alternatives.

Diet and Nutrition

Recent studies show that atopic dermatitis may be related to allergies to certain types of foods, for people whose dermatitis is triggered by food, the types of foods should be pin-pointed and eliminated from the diet as prevention from further flares.

Eczema can be very frustrating and embarrassing, and is something that there is no certain way to cure, only trial and error treatments that generally only last for as long as the treatment continues. However it does subside with age and is generally more prolific in those under the age of 16, so most people do not suffer for life. It is commonly passed through the family but not in all cases. There are many support groups and forums where discussion of effective treatments and other help can be found so the journey to be rid of Eczema is not one that has to be face alone.
