The value of textile and garment exports from Macau has fallen by 20.7% year-on-year between January and August according to the region's Statistics and Census Service. Exports of footwear have fallen by 62.4% in the same period, after European Union (EU) ministers imposed anti-dumping duties on leather upper footwear exported from Macau following concerns about illicit trade diversion. Investigations by the European Commission showed that after duties ranging from 9.7% to 16.5% were imposed in 2006 on mainland Chinese exports, there was a huge boom in cut-priced exports of leather upper footwear from Macao. Textile and garment exports accounted for 59.4% of Macau's total exports in the first eight months of 2008, down from 65% of the total in the same period last year.
