Taking on the responsibility of boating bares just as much importance as the getting behind the wheel of a car. Unfortunately, too many people do not take the time to learn all the ins and outs of the boating laws in their provinces, resulting in high fines. This can completely take away from what is meant to be an enjoyable summer time experience. In order to be responsible, take the time to learn about the following aspects that are important when you are going to be operating a boat.

First, obtaining a boating license is important. Not just anyone has the right to operate a boat, just as not just anyone can drive a car. People must take a boater exam. However, the process of obtaining your boat license is not as tedious as obtaining a driver's license. Information can be found online and free study guides are provided. A boat exam will generally cover the rules and regulations of operating a boat in your province. You will also learn about water rescue equipment, basic seamanship techniques, systems of communication with other boaters, the rules of the nautical road, and the buoyage system. Learning all of these procedures and systems will keep yourself and your fellow passengers safe on the water.

Taking passengers into your boat leaves you with a major responsibility. Dangerous boating has been known to cause serious injuries, as well as death. As the operator of the vehicle, you are responsible for everyone in your boat. Make sure you are entitled to that responsibility and obtain all necessary permits. Not only will this keep your passengers safe, you can make sure you are covered should an unfortunate accident occur. If you do not have a proper permit or boating license and you are involved in an accident, you will be faced with many expensive charges, and depending on the severity of the accident, you may be forced to face even more dire consequences.

It is important to understand all the boating laws of your province before taking your boat out on the water. This includes understanding the laws regarding how many people are safely permitted inside your boat at one time, as well as understanding all the laws regarding alcohol. Alcohol is never permitted when operating any kind of mode of transportation. The consequences of drinking and boating can be as severe as drinking and driving. Again, it is very important that you do not put others in danger.

When operating a boat, you are required to have your PCOC (pleasure craft operator card) on you at all times. You must always be able to identify yourself and demonstrate your entitlement to boat operation.

Boating is supposed to be a fun activity for yourself, your family and your friends. Make sure you can keep the experience enjoyable for everyone by boating responsibly and with complete knowledge of all the rules and regulations of your province. This is the only way to ensure safety and fun.
