Would James Bond swap his Walther PPK for a green mobile phone, or Wonderwomen give up her whip or Luke Skywalker his Lightsaber for a greener mobile? Time after time they have saved the earth and mankind from almost certain destruction, each of them with their signature weapons of choice to stop evil and to bring about peace. If it helped them save a situation, then yes I'm sure they would?
So which one of them will stop the new baddy that's come into town? How will our superheroes, using green mobile phones, defeat the new villain and save the world from impending doom?
Invisible to the eye, sneaky and growing under our very noses, this latest baddy is a super villain, one that's willing to bring harm to our world. What is its plan? Does it involve rockets, world take over, silicon chips or the old favourite, gold bullion?
Well THEY don't actually have a plan, there not organized into a bad gang, but there are 4.1 billion of them on the planet and they're gaining on us with 5% growth year on year. What is it, who is it?
It's you and your mobile phone.
Well not just you, it's all of us really. But when I look at myself, I don't see myself as the villain of the peace. I'm not the MD of some crazy corporation, wearing an eye patch, stroking a white cat.
Whilst 'candy bar shape' might describe them, mobile phones are not as sweet as they might first appear. There is an environmental impact with owning a mobile phone, along with other technological goodies, and their production processes are, in part, changing the delicate balance of our atmosphere by increasing the carbon content around the earth.
But how?
Mobile phones use up huge amounts of resources such as gold, copper, iridium, lithium, silver, lead, zinc, palladium and tin to name but a few. But is a mobile phone really that evil? How can I be causing such environmental damage just by simply sending a text, or an MMS, what could be so bad about my chatting on my mobile phone to my pals locally or around the globe? It's not me, not my little old phone.
In isolation a mobile phone call is nothing, it's the collectiveness of our phone calls. If you consider that if you were to talk on a mobile phone for an hour a day, in a year you could produce up to a tonne of CO2, the equivalent CO2 emissions of a trip by jet from London to New York. And when you add the fact that about 4 billion calls are made a day then figures for CO2 get a little bit thick out there!
Should you stop making calls to your friends - absolutely not!
That's where green mobile phones come into their own. If you do want to buy a greener mobile, choose one that's been designed with environmentally friendliness in mind. And don't just leave it at that! Why not look at taking measures to cut down your mobile phones energy consumption. If you only do one thing - when you have charge up your phone, make absolutely sure you switch off the charger and that will help to make a dent in your carbon emissions.
So we can all be superheroes, each and every one of us and including those who are just short of a cloak, we can do our bit to look after our world, and by making simple changes in the way we do things, then we should beat this new villain in time for tea.
