Dublin Attractions: The Hugh Lane Gallery

The Hugh Lane Gallery was originally opened in 1908 and has expanded in both size and exhibits over the past 100 years. Sir Hugh Lane kindly donated the Gallery's original collection. All ages are catered for with a display that has grown from 39 to over 2000 paintings, including the world renowned Les Parapluies by Renoir.
The Hugh Lane Gallery is known as being the First Metropolitan Gallery of Modern Art in the world. There's a designated children's area where you're provided with paper and crayons and encouraged to draw pictures of any exhibits that may "inspire you". As you wander around the magnificent building (Charlemont House) you'll encounter paintings by some of the most famous Irish and International artists, such as Jack B Yeates, John Lavery, Walter Osborne, Monet and Degas, just to name but a few.
Situated within the Hugh Lane Gallery is the famous reconstructed art studio of the world-renowned painter Francis Bacon. This display is not to be missed as the entire contents of his London studio have been reconstructed using all the original materials and artefacts such as doors, walls and floors along with over 7,500 other items. Admission to the permanent collection is free of charge but there is a fee to view the Francis Bacon Studio.

Friday & Saturday: 10am - 5pm
Sunday: 11am - 5pm

How to get here…
To get to The Hugh Lane Gallery we recommend you take bus routes 3,10,11,13,16,19,46A or 48A, all of which pass near the Gallery. Or you can enjoy the 10-minute walk from Connolly and Tara Street stations. From Parnell Statue at the top of O'Connell Street, continue to the top of Parnell Square and turn left. If travelling on the Luas go as far as the Middle Abbey Street stop.
From the Gallery you can explore some of the many attractions in and around the city centre. A short walk away on Parnell Square you'll find the Gate Theatre where they offer an extensive programme appealing to all ages and interests. The popular Guinness Brewery (where you can sample a drop of the black stuff) and James Joyce Museum are also situated close by.
Our top tip to you would be to take this opportunity to visit The Irish Writers Museum. The Museum celebrates 300 years of famous Irish writers such as Oscar Wilde, Samuel Beckett, James Joyce and many more. You'll have the opportunity to look into the lives of writers who have made a profound impact on both the Irish and International literary world. The Irish Writers Museum is situated on Parnell Square a short walk from the Hugh Lane Gallery.
