Protecting Our Children

There was a time not too long ago when children were allowed to go into the neighborhood without parents worrying about their safety. They were encouraged to get out of the house to play games or walk to school, by themselves. Everybody knew their neighbors, most parents stayed married and most mothers stayed home to watch the kids. The major issue to deal with was how to handle the neighborhood bully. Dealing with him was a right of passage.

Today people rarely know all their neighbors, there are more single parent families and most mothers must work to support the family. The neighborhood bully has been replaced by the predator. Predators are found everywhere. There are sexual predators, drug predators, internet predators and now more than ever extended family predators like step dad or step mom.

Children cannot be left unsupervised without becoming targeted by these pariahs. They must be continuously taught to identify and deal with predators. They must be continuously supervised, which can be expensive like daycare, or time consuming like play dates, monitoring internet usage and transporting them to supervised events.

Some parents are able to deal with these issues better than others. All of them must do the best they can. There is help. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children has developed http://www.missingkids.com/ . There are also non-lethal products available to help keep track of children and protect them if necessary. You may find many of these on websites such as http://www.safetyzoneprotection.com
