The average American constantly hears the words "tartar" and "dental deposit" from advertising clips promising to relieve the person of these troubles forever. In what degree are their promises truthful? What role is played by the tartar and the dental deposit in your mouth?

To begin with let's divide these two notions. The dental deposit which is much worse than the tartar is soft, sticky, almost invisible adjournment accumulating on teeth, seals, crowns, prostheses, and also on gums and tongue. We have the dental deposit almost always, even the mouth of a newborn is sterile only within first ten hours of its life approximately.

Tartar is calcareous adjournment which contains bacteria, and sometimes the usual dental deposit. This white substance reminds chalk by its look. Though the tartar promotes formation of the dental deposit, its removal is considered as a cosmetic procedure in stomatology.

The deposit results in formation of caries and gums-diseases as the bacteria living in the dental adjournment, eat carbohydrates (including sugar, even containing by fruits and milk, and starches contained in bread, macaroni products and crackers), they allocate an acid which erases the dental enamel, promoting the occurrence of caries. Some bacteria influence the gums causing their reddening, inflammation and bleeding. These are symptoms of gingivitis, an early stage of the gums-disease. Without treatment the gums-disease can lead to the inflammation up to the stage when healthy teeth are loosened and drop out. Diseases of gums are the main reason of teeth loss among the people older 35 years.

Both the tartar, and the dental deposit can be formed both above and under the line of gums. Stomatologists delete the tartar and the dental deposit wherever they were formed.

The tooth-pastes containing the additives preventing the occurrence of tartar really possess the ability to reduce adjournment of tartar substantially, exactly up to 50 %. But they do not possess the ability to destroy the already appeared tartar, and also to remove the tartar under the gums.

But if you clean your teeth regularly and correctly, the tartar won't appear as while cleaning you will delete deposits every time. If in spite of the fact that you clean your teeth, you nevertheless have the adjournment of tartar, it means that you do something wrong while cleaning your teeth.
