The Dual Diagnosis - One Of The Most Sensitive Forms Of Drug Treatment In Iowa
There are several kinds of addiction treatment program in Iowa, each one differing from the other in the kind of addiction they treat and the policies that they adopt. But none of these programs is quite as sensitive as the dual diagnosis form of treatment. Let us check out how dual diagnosis drug treatment in Iowa works.
As the name suggests, the dual diagnosis is a method of treating two coexisting conditions in the person's body at once. These two conditions are mostly mutually influencing conditions. One of them affects the other, and hence their treatments are also interrelated.
Consider the example of the dual diagnosis program for drug treatment in Iowa. Here, the patient has a drug addiction that may be complicated by several other conditions, which could include a mental or a physical problem. Usually, people who check in for dual diagnosis drug treatment in Iowa are suffering from a mental condition, so let us restrict our discussion to that.
The mental condition might play a very important role in complicating the treatment process. What is the most important attribute for a person to come out of an addiction? It is most definitely the resolve of the person to do so. However, when a person has a psychiatric problem, this becomes difficult because the person is not able to make the mental resolve necessary to stay away from the addiction. The weak mental nature of the person does not allow him or her to understand the extent of the problem they are in and for that reason they can go into a much stronger process of denial than other people.
However, this denial definitely needs to be removed if the person has to be brought out to a proper channel of treatment. This is done through the dual diagnosis method. A simultaneous method of treatment is conducted to treat both the addiction and the mental condition that is making it more complicated. This way, there is assured treatment for both conditions, since the mental condition impedes the treatment of the addiction and most surely, the addiction too impedes the treatment of the mental condition. The only way to treat both these things at once is to provide a treatment method that allows treating both conditions in an alternating fashion.
This is how a typical dual diagnosis drug treatment in Iowa would be conducted.
There is no phase of overcoming denial in such treatment for the simple reason that it would be very difficult to motivate patients to come out of their usage of the substance, keeping their errant mental condition in mind. For that reason, these people are directly led into a detox program.
The detox program will need to be different than the normal detox treatment that is conducted in Iowa. One of the main reasons for this is the underlying condition of the mental sickness that will make it much more difficult for the person to sail through the withdrawal. It will become difficult tot keep the patient focused on the treatment. Hence, the detox is carried out almost forcibly by the treatment providers. It will take longer than the normal detox treatment too. While other detox treatments are completed within one week at the most, the detox treatment for a person who is suffering from a mental condition could take even up to three weeks or more because the mental condition will keep on impeding the progress of the treatment.
The detox treatment is said to be over when the person does not feel the craving for the substance again and the person is out of the withdrawal process. Of course, complete recovery cannot be expected all at once, and in people with a coexisting mental condition, this is quite a tall order to achieve. But even when there is a sustainable degree of removal of the patient from the conditions of withdrawal, the detox treatment can be considered to be completed in such cases.
After the detox treatment, the person is led into a psychiatric counseling program. Here a psychiatrist would deal with the person, first through interviews and then through treatment. The interviews are important because the person has to be assessed for the extent and nature of the mental condition. Once that is gathered, a treatment program in chalked out for the person. This treatment program will answer the needs of the person's addiction as well as try to bring a solution for the inner mental condition that the person is suffering from.
