The welcoming Costa Blanca village of Algorfa is situated in the Vega Baja region of the Alicante province of Spain. One of the areas many citrus farming villages, Algorfa lies in the lush and fertile Segura river valley, surrounded by orange and lemon groves and having panoramic views of the mountains and of the Mediterranean Sea.
A Jesuit archaeologist from Orihuela made an interesting discovery in 1903 in the area of Algorfa which gives evidence of settlers as long ago as 3,000 BC. The remains of twelve humans and some tools and implements are all that is left of Algorfa's early inhabitants.
Founded in 1328 when Alfonso II granted Algorfa a privilege and made it part of the kingdom of Valencia, the original village consisted of 15 properties housing 15 families. This privilege was later withdrawn by Felipe V at the end of the War of Spanish Succession 1714, the privilege was however restored before the end of the eighteenth century by king Carlos IV at the request of the Marquesses of Algorfa.
Modern day Algorfa is a warm and friendly place, where visitors are always given a smile and a generous welcome. The delightful village square houses the church, the Town Hall (Ayuntamiento) and the police station, it is the centre of the community and the location for many fiestas, celebrations and local activities. There are several shops, restaurants and bars around the square but Algorfa is not a busy place, more of a quiet retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Algorfa enjoys a fabulous Mediterranean climate with an average annual temperature of around 19 degrees centigrade and in excess of 300 days of sunshine each year. The whole region has very little rainfall - the Segura river valley generally having the lowest annual rainfall in the whole of Spain.
Other attractions in the area around Algorfa are the Parque Natural de Las Lagunas de La Mata y Torrevieja (Natural Park of the Torrevieja and La Mata salt lakes), the cave houses and Shell house at Rojales, the nineteenth century church (in a neo-gothic style) on the way to Benejuzar and the Palace of the Marquis de Fontabla at Jacarilla with its extensive and lavish gardens.
Algorfa also has its own busy market held on a Sunday and always worth a trip.
The more energetic visitor may wish to make use of Algorfa's sporting facilities - these include the recreation centre with a choice of sports which includes swimming, five-a-side soccer, squash and tennis. During the summer months a trip to the Aqua Park in the neighbouring town of Quesada would also be in order. Golfers will definitely wish to play a round or two on the nearby La Finca Golf Club - this fine 18 hole championship course was designed by Jose Gancedo. The course is set in lovely natural surroundings and incorporates lakes with running water and reed beds to add difficulty and variety.
Though Algorfa is an inland village, it is still very close to a number of fine sandy beaches, the popular seaside resort of Guardamar del Segura is just a 15 minute drive away. The beaches of La Mata, Torrevieja and the Orihuela Costa are also within easy reach.
So this is Algorfa - the little Costa Blanca village with a big welcome.
Algorfa is located on the Southern Costa Blanca and can be accessed from the CV-91 road between Guardamar del Segura and Orihuela. Also close by is junction 740 of the AP-7 motorway which runs from Crevillente to Cartagena.
