The greatest beauty about the Yahtzee game is that it's very simple to learn, and anyone can pick up the game and grow to love it in a matter of minutes. By the end of this article, you would already have learned how to play the game. But first, a little background information on the game.

The Yahtzee game is a dice game which consists of five dice and some game scoring cards. It was invented by a wealthy Canadian couple in 1954. The couple wanted to think of a game that they could play to pass time while they were sailing on their yacht between ports. For this reason, the game was initially named The Yacht Game. They found the game fun, and went on to make copies of the game to give to their friends. To their surprise, their friends happened to like the game as well, and they in turn, told more of their friends. Later, the couple decided to sell the exclusive rights to Edwin Lowe, who decided to change the name of the game to Yahtzee. Perhaps he wanted a more unique name for marketing reasons. And he probably made the right decision because the game went on to become a widely popular game all around the world.

The main reason for this success is that throughout the years, the Yahtzee game has remained simple. There are innovative variations of this game, but none are as popular as the classic game. It's simplicity will blow anyone away, as you shall see.

The Yahtzee game is played with five dice, over a total of thirteen hands. During each hand, a player is allowed a maximum of three rolls, but this is not mandatory. At the end of three rolls, the result is recorded in the score card. The goal for each hand is to achieve the greatest value in a poker hand.

For example, a player starts a hand by rolling all five dice. The results are 3, 3, 3, 5, 1. He then decides to keep the three 3s, and proceed with the second dice roll with only two dice. The result is now 3, 3, 3, 5, 5. He may stop rolling and record this result and that completes the hand. Or if the results for the second roll turns out to be 3, 3, 3, 5, 2, he may decide to roll a third time, keeping the three 3s again, and rolling two dice. At the end of the thirteen hands, the player with the highest poker scores on the score cards will win. As there are thirteen hands in a game, this allows ample time for players to catch up, even when they scored low for the first few hands. As such, the game is often filled with excitement and anticipation.

As the Yahtzee game can be picked up by anyone in just a matter of minutes, it's the ideal game for social events such as birthday parties, BBQ sessions, class gatherings, family gatherings and so on. Did you manage to learn the game yet? Perhaps you may want to try it out for yourself now with a few friends. But be forewarned: You may fall hopelessly in love with the Yahtzee game.
