The story is set in northern England during the coal miners' strike of 1984. While his family struggles to keep food on the table and the town struggles with unemployment, Billy is sent to boxing class with all the other boys. To be frank, Billy is no good at boxing.

He inadvertently finds a ballet class and is intrigued. The only problem is that there are no boys in the class and his conservative family would not approve. Billy goes anyway and his teacher recognizes his talent and potential. She wants him to go to London to audition for a dance school, but family problems get in the way. See how Billy eventually gets to the audition and what happens to his family by getting your own Billy Elliot tickets!

The movie was not originally a musical, but legendary composer Sir Elton John wrote the music that brought it to stage. This is not John's first composition for stage. He also wrote the music for The Lion King, Aida and Lestat. Lee Hall wrote the book and lyrics along with the original screenplay. Hall has written other plays like Spoonface Steinberg and Cooking with Elvis.

Billy Elliot had successful runs in both England and Australia before coming to Broadway. Billy is played by three rotating actors, David Alvarez, Trent Kowalik and Kiril Kulish. Alvarez has been in dancing productions with the American Ballet Theater like Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker. Kowalik has been in dance training since the age of 3. He won the World Irish Dancing Championship at 11, making him the youngest American male to do so. He has performed as Billy with the London cast. Kulish is from San Diego, California and has won ballet and ballroom dancing competitions as well as performed with the American Ballet Theater.

The show has won multiple awards like four Laurence Olivier Awards. The music will keep you captivated with songs like, "Born to Boogie," "Expressing Yourself" and "He Could Be a Star."
