Online poker freeroll tournaments can be a fun way to play poker online, and with some good play and good luck they can be a profitable way to build your bankroll. However if you don't control your thoughts and emotions, they can be costly. Freeroll poker is a very unique type of poker. Online poker with buy-in's are played much differently, so the entire experience is much different as well. With that in mind, it is imperative that you take a hardened emotional mindset when entering into the freeroll games.

To avoid the hidden costs of freerolls, don't allow them to impact your poker playing habits, your emotions, or your decision making. Think of them as a fun, or sometimes not so fun, diversion from your regular poker play. Don't allow yourself to anticipate winning any hand, no matter how strong it seems. Doing so will only set you up for disgust and disappointment if it goes down in flames to a terrible starting hand. Also, never allow yourself to become cocky if you find yourself playing deep in freerolls often. Lasting into the deeper spots of a freeroll does not necessarily make you a favorite to fill your arm with WSOP bracelets in the coming years. Instead of letting your confidence spill into cockiness, keep your eye on the prize and stay focused on making good decisions. While your opposition is throwing caution at the wind by chasing inside straights, play your game and make solid decisions each hand without your ego in the way.

Even good players often play poorly on online poker freerolls. They take wild chances and neglect odds. Some players simply do not wish to invest the time and mental effort to play their best poker right out of the gates. If their wild play luckily nets them a sizable chip stack, they will then change gears and play up to their potential in an effort to hit upon the money positions. This means that you should enter into play in any online poker freeroll with a solid emotional guard. Never expect a win before the chips are slid in your direction. Never anticipate a win, no matter how strong your hand looks pre-flop, on the flop, or on the turn. Train your emotions and your mind to stay on even ground. Feel the satisfaction only after you are certain of the win by all opponents folding or at the showdown. The letdown that comes with the anticipation of a win that never comes to fruition is the most damaging reaction.

Freeroll poker tournaments come in all sorts of structures and sizes. From promotions at live action card rooms to perks for online poker players, freerolls are a common and popular means to attract new players and reward regular patrons. Online Poker veterans will tell you, though, that freerolls often bear very little resemblance to tournaments that have actual financial buy-ins. At times, freerolls seem to be a means to a quick confidence boost as you command the table. At other times, you experience maddening psychological lows as you watch horrific bad beats befall you. The freeroll may not cost you any money to enter, but it can cost you psychologically if you are not prepared for the pervasive up's and down's.
