Most people aren't getting the right answers in life because they haven't yet learned how to ask the right questions. Here are some tips to help you ensure that you are asking the questions that will lead to success, rather than the questions that lead to failure.
Before I give you some good questions to ask I would like to discuss the rules for answering those questions.
The only valid answers to these questions are answers that allow you to personally take responsibility for your outcomes, past, present and future.
Let me give you an example.
Imagine I suggested that you ask yourself the following question; why haven't I already attained my goal? (Which is a very good question to ask yourself.)
Answers which list off a bunch of circumstances or external causes are of no value what so ever. You need to answer this question is terms of actions you are currently taking, actions that you have been failing to take, attitudes that you currently have, attitudes that you should have but haven't developed, habits or beliefs that are holding you back, or habits or beliefs that you need to develop to move you forward. In other words answer in terms of your thoughts, actions or inactions.
These answers immediately pinpoint elements of your own thoughts and behaviors that you can set about changing or improving. Therefore they are answers that empower you.
Answering in terms of outside influences only serves to frustrate you or depress you and therefore are of little or no help.
Okay, so that's the rule of the game; answer all questions in terms of your own thoughts, actions, or inactions.
Here are some questions that are worth asking.
What do I need to know in order to achieve my goal?
- This opens your mind to the possibility of success and directs you toward improving your outcomes.
How can I learn this?
- This is goal-action oriented.
How do I find people to help me and how do I convince them to help me?
- This is the first step to getting others to help you.
What resources do I need in order to achieve this goal?
- This leads to proactive, success oriented thinking.
What can I do to acquire those resources?
- Again it is proactive, action oriented.
In what ways can I improve my thoughts, beliefs, habits and actions to make it easier or more certain that I will achieve my goal?
- This is the key question for unlocking the door to success.
As well as questions you should ask there are questions that you should never ask. These are questions that imply that your outcomes are the result of outside forces.
Here are some examples of the "never ask" questions.
Why do bad things always happen to me?
- Bad things don't happen TO you. You create them by your thoughts, actions or inactions.
Why can't I ever get ahead?
- You are telling yourself, in the phrasing of this question, that you can't get ahead. You are programming yourself for failure.
Its time for you to take action!
What sort of questions have you been asking yourself and where have they been taking you?
Develop the habit of asking the right questions and you will start to get the right answers.
